Public questions and answers for The British Carpet Company

Question 1

How much clearance should I leave under a door so it opens freely over new carpet?

Accepted Answer

There is no single clearance that suits every door. The gap needed depends on the carpet and underlay thickness, the door’s swing and the condition of its hinges and frame. A carpet layer can advise on the floor build-up, but a qualified carpenter or handyman should check the door on site and decide whether it needs trimming or adjustment. Avoid cutting it based only on an estimate: too much can leave an unnecessary gap, while too little may still cause rubbing. If you are replacing carpet, mention any tight doors before installation and ask the installer to note the finished floor height and likely clearance issue. Then have the tradesperson assess the door with that information before making changes. This is especially useful where several doors or uneven floors are involved. For a carpet project, confirm the chosen carpet and underlay thickness and discuss any tight clearances as part of the measuring and installation planning.

Question 2

Would a woven wool or a synthetic loop carpet be easier to live with in a sandy beach house?

Accepted Answer

Both can suit a coastal interior, but the better fit depends on how the rooms are used and how much cleaning you expect. Woven wool offers natural warmth and texture, while a synthetic performance fibre may provide stronger stain and fade resistance and can be easier to maintain. Textured or loop constructions can give a relaxed coastal look; a mid-tone or tone-on-tone pattern may disguise sand and everyday foot traffic better than a very pale, plain surface. Consider where sand is most likely to be carried in, the amount of sunlight the room receives and whether frequent vacuuming is practical. Product performance varies, so do not assume every wool or synthetic carpet behaves the same way. Check the care instructions and suitability for the specific room before deciding. Compare samples in the beach house’s natural light and ask about fibre, construction and cleaning requirements for each option. Current colours and availability should be confirmed before purchase.

Question 3

What should households with children or pets check about carpet types, brands and product ranges?

Accepted Answer

Check stain cleanability, resistance to crushing and snagging, how easily hair can be removed, whether spills can reach the backing and whether the pile disguises tracking. Ask for the manufacturer’s cleaning instructions and test whether the colour and texture remain forgiving in the room’s actual light and traffic pattern. This category covers Carpet fibres, constructions, brands, product ranges, wool versus nylon, plush, velour and other flooring choices. Do not judge on softness alone. Fibre, pile construction, density, backing, roll width, underlay and installation all affect appearance, comfort, cleanability and long-term wear. Carpet fibres differ in feel, performance and care needs, so choice should match the room and lifestyle. Wool is a natural fibre prized for its warmth, resilience and comfort; it performs well in living areas when maintained to manufacturer guidance. Nylon is a hard‑wearing synthetic noted for durability and good stain performance, commonly chosen for high‑traffic zones. Keep the exact product name, colour, batch details, written specification, care guide and warranty conditions with the final quote so future cleaning, repairs or replacement discussions refer to the carpet actually supplied.

Question 4

How do underlay and installation affect the result with pet, family and heavy-traffic carpet?

Accepted Answer

Underlay changes comfort, acoustic performance, support and the way carpet wears, while installation controls joins, tension, edges, stairs and the finished level at doors. A good carpet over unsuitable underlay or poor preparation can feel disappointing and age prematurely, so compare the whole installed system rather than the face fibre alone. This category covers Carpet choices for dogs, cats, children, busy homes and high-traffic areas where wear, cleaning and comfort all matter. Do not judge on softness alone. Fibre, pile construction, density, backing, roll width, underlay and installation all affect appearance, comfort, cleanability and long-term wear. Choosing a pet‑friendly carpet involves trade‑offs between stain resistance, durability and comfort. Synthetic fibres such as solution‑dyed nylons and polypropylene generally tend to offer strong stain resistance and colourfastness and can be easier to clean; wool provides natural softness and resilience but may need more specialist care. Blot spills promptly with a clean white cloth and avoid rubbing; follow manufacturer care instructions and seek professional advice for valuable wool or woven carpets. Keep the exact product name, colour, batch details, written specification, care guide and warranty conditions with the final quote so future cleaning, repairs or replacement discussions refer to the carpet actually supplied.

Question 5

How should I choose between wool and synthetic carpet for a sunny, sand-prone coastal room?

Accepted Answer

The main trade-off is natural feel versus specific performance needs. Wool is valued for warmth, softness and a natural appearance, and some woven wool carpets can be resilient. Synthetic performance fibres, including solution-dyed nylon, are often chosen where colour stability and stain resistance are priorities. The exact result depends on the carpet’s construction and product specifications, so do not assume every wool or synthetic carpet behaves the same way. For a beachside room, also consider how much direct sun it receives, how often sand is tracked in, and how much cleaning the household is comfortable doing. A textured or tighter-loop surface can help disguise everyday grit; entry mats and regular vacuuming reduce sand moving through the home. Mid-tone neutrals and tone-on-tone textures tend to conceal sand and foot traffic more readily than very pale, plain colours. Compare samples in the room’s natural light and check the care guidance for each option. If comparing products in person, ask the showroom to confirm the fibre, construction, colourfastness information and current availability before deciding.

Question 6

How should I compare comfort, appearance and durability when considering stair carpet and landings?

Accepted Answer

The main trade-off is rarely simply cheap versus expensive. Softer or more decorative constructions may show tracking or need more care, while highly resilient options can feel firmer or offer a different visual character. Rank comfort, appearance, cleanability, durability, acoustics and budget for the actual room before comparing products. This category covers Fully carpeted staircases, landings, turns, edges, safety, durability and professional installation. Do not judge on softness alone. Fibre, pile construction, density, backing, roll width, underlay and installation all affect appearance, comfort, cleanability and long-term wear. Stair-appropriate carpets balance durability, traction and appearance. Loop or textured loop piles generally offer better grip and wear characteristics; plush piles provide a softer, more luxurious feel but may need closer consideration for slip resistance. Stair runners—tailored or woven—deliver a neat visual finish and can be specified to suit a home’s style. Keep the exact product name, colour, batch details, written specification, care guide and warranty conditions with the final quote so future cleaning, repairs or replacement discussions refer to the carpet actually supplied.

Question 7

Will a blue plush carpet show shading or footprints as it gets walked on?

Accepted Answer

It can. In cut-pile carpets, footsteps may bend the pile in different directions, changing how light reflects and making some areas look lighter or darker. This is usually an appearance effect rather than a sign of a fault or reduced durability, though heavy traffic can make it more noticeable. Plush, solid-colour surfaces may make pile direction and footprints easier to see than a more textured construction, but the result also depends on the carpet, lighting and how it is used. Regular vacuuming helps lift the pile and remove grit; follow the manufacturer’s care instructions for the particular carpet. If you are choosing a blue plush style, look at a sample from more than one angle and in lighting similar to the room, and ask how its pile is expected to look under normal use. A showroom can confirm the characteristics of current products and shades.

Question 8

How should I choose flooring where the kitchen meets the living room?

Accepted Answer

For an open-plan kitchen and living area, consider where spills, moisture and heavy traffic are most likely, then choose flooring that suits each zone and the way the spaces connect. A hard surface such as LVT or tile is often practical in the kitchen because it is resilient and straightforward to clean. Carpet can add warmth and softness in a separate living zone, but it is better kept away from routine splashes and wet areas. Check the transition between materials: floor heights, thresholds, edges and the visual relationship between colours and textures all affect the finished result. If you prefer one continuous floor, compare options for moisture resistance, cleaning and underfoot comfort across the whole space rather than choosing by appearance alone. Bring room measurements and photos of adjoining finishes when comparing samples, and confirm the chosen products’ suitability and installation details before making a decision.

Question 9

What should I check in the quote to know exactly what the carpet installation includes?

Accepted Answer

Ask for the installation scope to be set out clearly in writing before you agree to proceed. It should identify what work is included and whether measuring, underlay, furniture moving, removal of the old carpet, trims or threshold work and any subfloor preparation are covered or charged separately. These items should not be assumed, as requirements and responsibilities vary by property and job. It is also worth discussing how seams will be positioned, how edges and corners will be finished, and how stairs or thresholds will be handled where relevant. The suitable method depends on the carpet and the site. Room complexity, access, staircases and preparation can affect both the final cost and timing, so ask for those details to be confirmed for your own home rather than relying on a general estimate. Before booking, check that the quote describes the chosen carpet and underlay, the areas being fitted, and any exclusions or site constraints. If anything is unclear, ask the showroom to clarify it and confirm current installation options, costs and scheduling directly.

Question 10

How can I choose patterned carpet that works with plain flooring or rugs in adjoining areas?

Accepted Answer

Treat the patterned carpet as one part of the overall scheme and compare it with the colours, textures and patterns already visible in adjoining spaces. A tonal repeat or restrained motif is often easier to connect with plain flooring or a patterned rug than a high-contrast design. If you want the carpet to be the feature, keep nearby surfaces and furnishings quieter; if the rug is the focal point, a subtler carpet can provide a calmer backdrop. Consider how the pattern will read across the room and at the transition to hard flooring. A large motif can feel more at home in a spacious, well-lit area, while a small repeat may be easier to use in a compact room. Scale matters particularly when another pattern, such as a rug or upholstery, is close by. There is no single rule: repeating one or two colours across the spaces can help them feel connected without matching everything exactly. Compare samples alongside your flooring, rug and furnishings in the room’s usual light. Patterns and current ranges vary, so check current samples before deciding; a showroom can also help you assess scale and coordination.

Question 11

Can the wrong underlay make a carpet feel too soft or wear out sooner?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Underlay that is too soft or poorly matched to the carpet can allow excessive movement, which may affect how the carpet wears and feels. Carpet and underlay need to work together: the right choice depends on the carpet construction, room use and floor beneath it. A firm, stable feel is especially important in busy areas, while comfort and sound absorption may be priorities in bedrooms or upper-floor rooms. Thickness alone is not a reliable guide; density and the carpet maker’s requirements matter too. Before choosing, check that the proposed underlay is suitable for the carpet and the subfloor, and ask how it may affect the finished feel and performance. If you are replacing carpet, have the installer assess the existing floor and explain any preparation needed rather than assuming the old underlay can be reused. Bring the carpet details or a sample when comparing options, and confirm the recommendation for your room before ordering.

Question 12

How do underlay and installation affect the result with stair carpet and landings?

Accepted Answer
